I just want to make sure I understand what I have read on the forum, blog, and documentation.

If you have a parent child form, and the child list exceeds the 5K limit, it will not display the Related Items even if the parent would filter the children to <5K?

In this scenario you first need to create a view containing less than 5000 items Then pick this view in the Data Source editor in Forms Designer and the Related Items should work fine
