Custom Template people picker field

I'm using Forms Designer Client 3.1.4 with a SharePoint 2013 ECT list. Is it possible to use a people picker field in a custom template?

Yes, the people picker field is supported in Forms Designer.

I am using an External Content Type list. The field types available are text and date. However changing the control template type from default to custom and editing the HTML and JavaScript you can for example add a html drop down list and put the selection into the text field. I want to use a people picker field, but don't know how or if it is possible.

Unfortunately, this is not possible to display External Data field as the People picker field since People Picker does not support external data sources.
