List over 5000 items... could that be the issue?

I had a cross site lookup that was working perfectly. then our list exceeded 5000 items and I split the list into 2 views. No other changes were made, but the look up no longer works. Is this the reason it stopped working? Is there a way I can look this up from a view? Thanks for any guidance.

That was it. I created a new list less than 5000 and now working again. I will use flow to see if I can just have the last top 4000 or so items in the look up at any given time
