Modifying 'You must specify a value for this required field'

I'm hoping to change the default message that appears when a user submits a form without filling out required fields. Currently the message is 'You must specify a value for this required field.' The text is also in black, so it blends in with the other sub-text for the question, which doesn't make it stand out in any way. Thoughts on potential solutions? Thank you.

Usually, the error is red, but it can be black occasionally... What type of List are we talking about? Can you attach a screenshot, please?
