Can we have a different button which performs same function as the default Save button?

Hi,
I wanted to know whether we can accomplish the same function what Save achieves using a different button?I know i can write a onclick handler for the newly created button but i want it to save data to list as well.

Sure, just activate Buttons feature and put another Save button (not a regular button) onto your form:
